Chronic Shoulder Pain...Years of pain?
I think I was 12 when I first noticed my pain. I was carrying my books in a shoulder bag about a mile to and from school every day. When my left shoulder hurt, I would switch to my right. My left shoulder hurt more and more. Since then, my left shoulder will hurt very bad sometimes. There used to be times shen I had less or no pain. It was extremely sensitive to cold temperatures, and would be fine if I was warm. Now I am 27 and just this year, the pain hardly ever ends. And sometimes it is excrutiating. It feels like I have a broken pencil stuck in it. Even the skin hurts. Nothing is visible. But now, it hurts even when I am warm. I know I should see a doctor, but I have no insurance. I just wonder if there is a name for what might be happening to my shoulder so I can look it up. The pain is in the back, a few inches from my spine.
I've also toted shoulder bags that were overloaded for years, have done a lot of typing and answering the phone, all of which can lead to shoulder pain. I think you need to see a doctor, preferably a Otho/sports specialist if you can go directly there without seeing a reg doc. you could save some money. I suspect you may have a shoulder impingement, caused by movement of the scapula (bone on the front of the shoulder) That can cause inflammation, tears, etc. Treatment can consist of rest, using oral drugs or more commonly corticosteroid injections into the shoulder. That usually provides relief. If conservative treatment fails, then surgery may be required to relieve the pain. I had moderate pain for several months then pain began that kept me awake at night and uncomfortable all the time. I had arthroscopic surgery in 2005, requiring an overnight hospital stay, and a period of time wearing a shoulder sling. I was able to return to work in about 10 days. After a few weeks of physical therapy done pretty much on my own at home (after instruction from a therapist) I was able return to my normal activities without the constant pain I had endured prior to treatment.
